Dualism is a term easily applied to Rachell Sumpter's series of new paintings, Molten Kin. Gouache, her medium of choice, allows her fluidity as well as exactitude, while her distribution of figures suggests both isolation and communal consciousness. Sumpter's narrative touches on memory and history, in addition to fantasy and myth; the resulting mirage-like play of disorienting surrealism and ethereal delicacy is as refreshing as desert rain.
