Randall Yarbrough's paintings conjure a storybook world of imaginary creatures and fantastic feats. Working with a pastel palette of acrylics on wood and canvas, Yarbrough depicts singular figures, at once waggish and alluring, against a wash of white or expansive landscapes. These whimsical characters, isolated though they are in the scope of the tableaux, appear joined thematically by a portentous and ironic evocation — and perhaps celebration — of childhood's inevitable loss of innocence. The artist's interest in Victorian styles and circus arts also infuses these paintings with a turn-of-the-century, vaudevillian air; fittingly, the pieces shown here draw significantly from work completed during Yarbrough's residency as a live painter with famed performance troupe Lucent Dossier.
