Forget art school: in São Paulo, Brazil, all the action's outside, where skaters, tattooists, graffiti artists, illustrators, rockers, and hip-hoppers commingle in a subtropical artistic stew. The collective Choque Cultural loosely herds the results together and disseminates them to the world — this month stopping at Culver City's Scion Installation Space. São Paulo features the work of, among others: Calma, an Evangelical minister's offspring whose style combines Afro-Brazilian folklore and Baroque religious iconography; fanzine patriarch MZK; street artist Speto, known for his traditional Brazilian woodcarving lines; and Titi Freak, who, when not collecting prizes as a yo-yo champ (seriously), fuses action painting, fashion imagery, and comics.
