Baltimore-born artist Chris Stain makes his West Coast solo-show debut with this exhibition — but he's starting at the top. Including stencils, spray paint, and mixed media on metal and found objects, Stain's work transforms the Carmichael Gallery into a New York rooftop, complete with a pigeon coop and the strains of live jazz. The artist's ambiguous stencil portraits, immersed in the installation design, grant viewers a distinct perspective on the hard parts of city living; portraying working-class individuals who strive for a better-than-common life, they illuminate their subjects' inner and outer struggles with haunting, edgy, and evocative symbolism, all in a mash of urban and romantic visual styles.
