Freyda Miller's body of work dates as far back as 1978, developing from her early conceptual photography to the Fertile Dreams assemblages and collages composed of heavily loaded symbols. Shot through with a streak of darkness, Miller's works possess an eerie gravity, a sense of electricity conducted through soft feathers, sharp wire, foliate carvings, and frayed gossamer fabrics. Coalescing as fetishes, or as monuments to the feminine divine, they leave the viewer with a strangely unsettled feeling — as if our classic notions of traditional motherhood and gender were only a veil over more complex, nuanced, and sinister realities. Miller's is a realm in which a doll's lidded porcelain eyes, or the glossy sheen of an eggshell, can easily conceal an ageless soul.
