Note:
Bogard's most recent work is also on view in Flesh + Bone at Sam Lee Gallery in Chinatown, through March 14.
Nevada-based artist Rebekah Bogard turns the VPAM into a glazed forest of approachable yet baffling imagined creatures. Handcrafted, life-sized ceramic renderings of subversive, fantastical beings populate a world of hard bubbly trees, toadstools, and flytrap-type flora, in which glowing turtles, salacious rabbits, boar-like lizards, and pink foxes abound. Some have curious organs; some have unlikely, off-putting orifices. Silver ceramic stars hover, illuminating the bizarre woodland of curious, polychromatic hybrids. Bogard's detailing comes from an interest in natural science, but the bizarre animals here are revealing, endearing manifestations of her own imagination.
