Brooklyn-based watercolorist Rebecca Bird takes an unlikely, poetic approach to her considerations of destruction. In this series of explosions, based on photographs of atom bombs and mushroom clouds, Bird reformulates the violence of the blown-to-smithereens events as almost organic, though no less volatile, evocations of natural chaos. Her painfully lovely palette, patience with the miniscule detailing of swirls, clouds, shards, and shadows, and caustic undercurrent of commentary on the absurdity of nuclear nihilism combine to devastating, sumptuously beautiful effect.
