Sigrid Sandström

Sigrid Sandström's new works embrace a constant reconsideration (and re-reconsideration) of the role of illusion in painting. As the pieces speak in the immediate visual language of collage, the traditional mimetic role of painting becomes revealed. Rather than employing painted paper torn, cut, and glued on, or masking tape adhered to the surface, Sandström employs a hyper-realistic rendering of these modest art-studio paraphernalia. The use of tape hints at a formalist baring of the device — only, in this case, it's pretend.
