For artist Phung Huynh, a keen awareness of her Vietnamese culture's long memory and claim on her affections combines with an American-style wickedness of wit and insight. Her luxurious palettes, crisp draftsmanship, and subversive narratives flirt with being disturbing, but never lose their puckish charm. Precocious babies with third eyes cruise dreamy, flower-strewn landscapes looking for trouble — finding it in the form of phallic-skulled wise men, willing women, and suckling pigs. Huynh's opium-vision twist on the language of Vietnamese folklore is rendered with a labor-intensive technique, seamlessly mirroring the masterpieces it cannibalizes for its own pleasure.
