Note:
The exhibition runs through April 27, with gallery hours by appointment.
In 2006, unscrupulous real-estate developers painted over one of the city's most beloved pieces of public art, a portrait of Ed Ruscha by noted muralist Kent Twitchell. Though his work is appreciated and studied the world over, like many of his fellow muralists, Twitchell's best work is often destroyed by accident or intent. The inaugural exhibition at new downtown space LOOK Gallery highlights a pair of ironic tragedies à la the Ruscha debacle, showing reconstructed plans, original sketches and notes, and in situ photographs of Twitchell's commissioned-but-never-executed Michael Jackson mural for West Hollywood; and his completed, but also destroyed, Steve McQueen mural on a private residence.
