Marc Bamuthi Joseph delivers a display of hip-hop dexterity with a performance driven by the conflicts between his public identity as an African-American spoken-word artist and a private life in which identity is constantly shifting. Bamuthi, whose activist roots have served as the underpinnings of a pulsing literary performance style, brings turntablist DJ Excess, multi-instrumentalist Ajayi Jackson, and Eli Jacobs Fantauzzi's video projections, and mixes them, in the moment — infusing the piece with layers of sound, cinema, movement, and, of course, beats.
