JF Chen is one of LA's most respected dealers of the kind of Art Deco and Modernist design that people call "pieces." But with its inaugural exhibition-proper, it makes the move toward more conceptual cultural presentations. Architectonic features the work of ceramicist Yassi Mazandi and furniture designer Michael Wilson, two very distinct voices who share one important sensibility: a respect for the raw properties of materials. Wilson's age-scarred wood furniture retains the contours and surface variations accumulated in its travels; he works with, rather than against, the organic beauty that makes each piece unique. Mazandi's sensual, fancy/primitive ceramics, meanwhile, revere the metaphor for skin and flesh that clay often suggests, making the perfect yin to Wilson's yang.
