Once earning a living as a nanny to Tom Waits' three children, singer/songwriter Jesca Hoop netted a nice little endorsement from her former employer when he described her music as akin to "going swimming in a lake at night." While certainly evocative, Hoop's sound is not always as tranquil as the simile might suggest, with elements from jazz, rock and beyond supporting a flair for the theatrical. Despite her eclecticism, Hoop is at her most affecting when she traverses her graceful compositions with just voice and guitar. Tonight she says goodbye to her native SoCal with a farewell performance at long-time home base the Hotel Café, before heading off to her new digs in Manchester, England.
