The only festival in the USA to showcase films from the Balkans and surrounding countries, the fourth annual South-East European Film Festival screens cinema from the former Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria, Austria, Hungary, Romania, and Turkey. Films in the five-day festival reflect a range of genres — including documentaries, narratives, and animation — and are screened at UCLA's James Bridges Theatre as well as the Los Angeles Goethe-Institut. The film fest winds down with a conference at UCLA's Faculty Center, Bridging the Divide: Unlocking the Byzantine Film Model, which aims to take a closer look at the cultural production of a commonly misunderstood region.
