Every once in a while, an art exhibition comes along that defies expectation, blows stodgy rules apart, and gets right to a transcendent level of pure, almost childlike, delight. Zadok Ben-David's current installation, Blackfield, offers just such an experience. A broad carpet of sand takes up most of the gallery floor, sprouting a field of black wildflowers — each of which, though small, is richly detailed and finely wrought of etched steel — and it appears that none of the 12,500 in evidence are identical. A monument to obsessive patience and skill, the view from the other side of the field sees the black blooms transform, as if by magic, into a breathtaking riot of color.
