Cheryl Dunye: The Watermelon Woman (1996)
Monday May 11, 2009 (8:30pm)
$9
Filmmaker Cheryl Dunye and producer Alexandra Juhasz appear at REDCAT to celebrate the revival screening of their winsome 1996 pseudo-documentary The Watermelon Woman. Dunye's cinematic debut chronicles the career of the fictional African-American actress and "Sapphic sistah" Fae Richards, aka the Watermelon Woman. In seeking to fully understand the identity of a nameless '30s bit player, Dunye unravels the details behind her own destiny as an African-American lesbian filmmaker. And while the story may not be real, histories of minorities in America are hard to come by; in the words of Dunye herself, "Sometimes you have to create your own."
