Since 2004, Extra Golden have been refining a bright-eyed blend of Kenyan benga music and American rock, smoothing out more of the seams with each passing album. Featuring two Kenyan and two American band members, it's a genuine transcontinental partnership, rather than some exotic import for stateside listeners. Most importantly, though, these guys rip it up musically, with tight rhythms and agile guitar work. Plus, while their songs are ebullient and eminently danceable, they also address heavy subjects like Africa's AIDS epidemic; you won't follow all of that, since they sing mostly in Luo, but it's something to think about while you get into the groove. Tonight, they headline an urban reggae festival so full of Jah love that it takes over both the Echo and Echoplex stages.
