Note:
A free evening with C.O.L.A.'s literary and performance art award-winners Bruce Bauman, Lionel Popkin, and Cheng-Chieh Yu takes place June 19 at 8pm at Grand Performances.
The City of Los Angeles (C.O.L.A.) Individual Artist Fellowships in the Arts, granted by the Department of Cultural Affairs, are distinguished — and intensely competitive — annual awards, honoring local artists working in a variety of media. Making good on the 19-year-old program's mission to "reinvigorate interest in Los Angeles as a creative place to live, work, or visit," the initiative also helps fill the vacuum left in the wake of the mid-80s evisceration of the NEA Individual Grant program. The awards provide finishing funds for ongoing projects, and the results, from ambitious installations to finely wrought paintings and impressive photography, are on display here; several awards are also given to innovative performance art and literature projects, to be performed offsite.
