Imagine the florid, hyper-decorative seduction of Kehinde Wiley's large-scale portraits of young black men, only rendered with an urban, folk-outsider edge, and you get a rough idea of what Barkley Hendricks' art has been about for decades. Working largely in the cities of the Northeast, Hendricks spent years painting life-size portraits of everyday people from the neighborhood, at a time when Black fashion, music, and hair were all at their biggest. This much-anticipated exhibition brings these works together for a survey spanning both years and sociopolitical contexts.
