Baltimore's art-spazz heroes Ponytail are that rare band that invites a friendly game of "spot the influence," but plays nothing like its clear points of reference. The guitar phrases on last year's excellent Ice Cream Spiritual echo prog and garage rock, and singer Molly Seigel's pre-verbal yelps invoke Yoko Ono, Yoshimi P-We, and (though less than before) Deerhoof’s Satomi Matsuzaki. God bless Baltimore, still too cool to play it cool.
