Fais Do Do says…

Though you aren't actually likely to find noted young scholar Reza Aslan's latest book in the How-To section, it does contain important advice. In his previous book, No god but God, Aslan presented curious Westerners with definitive exposition on the evolution of modern Islam's two main sects; his ability to paint accessible, broad strokes, then dive back in with detail and deft analogy, renders complex issues manageable and fosters cultural understanding. His new book claims that winning a cosmic war begins with refusing to fight in one. As he goes on to explain, this means resisting the urge to straight-jacket politics with inflamed religious rhetoric, and learning the value of patience and compassion when struggling to preserve one's identity as an engaged political being. Tonight's reading features a concert by Turkish indie-rock artist Kutsal and hip-hopper Omar Offendum.
