Although last month saw the tenth anniversary of the Columbine shootings, John Buffalo Mailer's raw, stylish morality play Hello Herman was in the works long before this tragic milestone. Returning to the Edgemar Center for the Arts after last October's noted workshop readings, this considerably amped-up multimedia staging features a full cast, including Mailer himself — in the ambiguously quasi-autobiographical role of a reporter conducting a video interview with a 16-year old gunman fresh off a campus killing spree. Though ostensibly a political fable about the senselessness of the death penalty and the vampirism of the cable-news provocateur/commentator class, its powerful subplot traces the moral resurrection of Mailer's character at the unlikely hands of the fortress-hearted, charismatic teen angel of death.
