Bay Area artist Andrew Schoultz crafts expansive murals and other large-scale paintings from innumerable individual lines and details. His densely swirled, complexly engineered views of landscapes and objects mimic the controlled chaos of wind-born debris forming a funnel cloud, with imagery emerging that is both poetic and seismic. An installation in the project room from photographer and collagist Hank Willis Thomas continues Thomas' excavation of African-American stereotypes as seen and constructed in commercial and advertising lexicons. Featuring thousands of found images of black sexuality viewed through the lens of white-dominated pop culture, Black Is Beautiful is both a celebration of and a powerful push-back against politically charged iconography.
