When it comes to depictions of the body, indictments of the power structures of human sexuality, and unapologetic appetites for flesh, no medium or source — from paint, wood, and Navajo rugs to classic Hollywood films and fairy-tale mythology — is safe from the artists in Western Project's spin on the ubiquitous summer group show. Highlights include Carole Caroompas' dark humor and multiplicity of styles, employed in the service of exposing the violent character of American pop culture; and Aaron Sheppard's exuberant, imposing depictions of feminine sex icons. Fashioned of paint, carved wood, and collage, Sheppard's lavishly baroque, seductive, and sometimes unsettling images, while historical, are anything but traditional.
