Nordic Mood: Photographs from Iceland by Friðgeir Helgason

Beyond Björk and ice hotels, most Americans don't have a lot of familiarity with Iceland — but the eerie beauty of its rural landscapes and the quirks of its vernacular architecture are sights to behold. A native of Iceland, photographer Friðgeir Helgason staged something of a prodigal return with this suite of images, made after an extended absence. Having left his country as a teenager, Helgason embarked on adventures including becoming a denizen of LA's Skid Row, a chef on New Orleans' five-star restaurant circuit, and a film student. These photographs represent his most recent project, the documenting of the physical and psychological stages of his fresh-eyed journey home.
