Note:
A concurrent exhibition surveying a variety of Fallen Fruit's projects opens at Another Year in LA on Saturday, June 20.
LA-based art and action collective Fallen Fruit uses the visual arts (specifically photography, installation, and performance-oriented actions) to examine the imbalance in quality of life between the producers and consumers of agriculture. In its first solo exhibition, the group presents selections from the ongoing project The Colonial History of Fruit, focusing on the banana. From being sexually suggestive to emblematic of colonial and corporate oppression, the subject provides a rich vein of visual inquiry. The opening reception features the participatory performance event Are You Happy to See Me?, in which audiences are encouraged to eat, and photograph themselves playing with, the yellow fruit.
