Years before the recent accolades from Rolling Stone, Double Dagger's first mainstream press was a feature in Metropolis — an architecture and design periodical. The Baltimore post-punk trio wrote snarky, self-conscious songs about graphic design (the band formed at MICA and members run the Post Typography design firm) that struck a chord with disillusioned art-school students. That connection was apparent at Double Dagger's 2003 Chicago appearance, when the group opened a memorable Lightning Bolt show at Texas Ballroom. Since then, the band's sound has blossomed and its thematic scope has widened: attacks on the angst-ridden art microcosm have given way to broader sociopolitical commentary.
