Check out Flavorwire's exclusive interview with John Vanderslice.
While many people know John Vanderslice from his solo work and his time with '90s alt-rock act MK Ultra, it's also been ten years since the indie stalwart opened his Tiny Telephone studio in San Francisco's Mission District. The former warehouse has since birthed indie touchstones such as Beulah's Yoko, and, more recently, records by the likes of Spoon, Okkervil River, the Mountain Goats, and Death Cab for Cutie. Tonight, Vanderslice appears with support from Sweden's the Tallest Man on Earth. Employing plaintive lyrics and gravelly intonation (think Deer Tick or Langhorne Slim), the Tallest Man's Kristian Mattson takes a simple approach to songwriting, using a lone acoustic guitar to accompany his gritty vocals.
