The lavishly illustrated docu-novel from artist Zak Smith expands on certain extant themes in his paintings and drawings — specifically those relating to the alt-culture, or indie wing, of the porn business. What began as an ambitious conceptual exercise in surreal sexual frankness eventually — some might say inevitably — tempted Smith into a George Plimpton-style adventure in immersive investigation. The resulting book is part diary and part travelogue, as the artist chronicles his adventures in front of the camera as eager amateur Zak Sabbath, with words, pictures, self-awareness, and dark humor.
