Eco-LA Gallery wants you to look at billboards differently. The ubiquity and influence of the outdoor ads are easy targets for critics of the outsized, aggressive image assaults that festoon our avenues. Four years ago, the Eco-LA folks were inspired to take action, upon learning that, quite aside from the aesthetic debate, the billboard industry is responsible for dumping tons and tons of ironically durable vinyl into landfills every year. An elegant solution presented itself when Eco-LA started reclaiming these discarded sheets and donating them to artists as free canvas, with stellar results. A new monthly event unveils large-scale work created in this way, both inside the mid-city gallery and, fittingly, on the huge billboard/public-art space above it.
