In her latest series of photographic and video projections, Nicole Cohen expands upon previous subject matter and technological complexity, constructing layered, hybrid images that are at once intimate and disorienting. Visitors to the Getty Center last year may remember her installation Please Be Seated, in which reproductions of chairs from the Getty's design galleries and Marie Antoinette's bedroom, among other places, were positioned so as to project the viewers' images into composite footage of the remote, romantic locales. For French Connection, Cohen combines original film, photo stills, and scanned graphics of country roads, pre-modern architectural structures and interiors, and private furnishings like armchairs and writing desks, exploring the relationship between personality, place, memory, and history.
