Art: Architecture/Design

Sophia Allison, Rebecca Lowry, and Ivo Vergara: Retrospect

Three very different artists enter into a dialogue about the persistence of memory and how recollections are formed, contorted, stored, and revived over time. Sophia Allison sees embroidery as a form of mark-making, similar to drawing, but with a more tactile presence — one fraught with nostalgic associations that mesh with the rural idylls she recreates. With his paintings and installation work, meanwhile, Ivo Vergara challenges the domination of fantasy by reason, preferring organic, imagined layers of ambiguous, evocative biota to the rigors of the precise observation of "reality." Finally, Rebecca Lowry focuses on the role of language in the ongoing engineering of one's life story, using the literal and metaphoric trope of the quilt as an embodiment of how the mind collects and weaves together experiences.
