It's a veritable amusement park for optic nerves at ACE Gallery's Beverly Hills location this month, with a pair of exhibitions that vibrates both resoundingly and subtly. Gary Lang's suite of outsize, impossibly bright concentric circles seems to combine church architecture with country-fair spin-paintings. The technology of Jay Mark Johnson's space-age camera allows him to make fixed-point images that depict objects and figures over time, as though his lens were a scanner, aimed at the world. Some elements move and read more clearly — others, like buildings and landscapes, collapse into rectilinear striations. The overall effect is ironically surreal and abstract, considering the hyper-accuracy of the depictions; they fairly dare you to decipher them, so give yourself time to solve their riddles.
