With a voice that sounds like it's channeling Laura Nyro or Carol King's Tapestry, LA-based soul singer Diane Birch could be accused of masterful mimicry from the book of '70s soul powerhouses. That is, until you hear any of the self-penned standout tracks from her debut, Bible Belt – the singer's own rich tapestry of ecclessiastical excess under religious rule. The daughter of a strict missionary, Birch spent much of her childhood in South Africa spreadin' the word before returning to the U.S. at age 13. Bible Belt echoes those early preachings with gospel-like choruses and affecting piano-heavy classics.
