Jim Gentry: Never Odd or Even and Leia Jervert: Cut Back

There's no excuse to feel glum when you're at Happy, a home and lifestyle nook in Los Feliz that features well-designed goods deserving of its snappy moniker. In addition to its design fare, Happy also offers gallery shows. Currently, the main space features Jim Gentry, who uses an inventive technique involving embroidering his line drawings with thread, and then running the canvas through a typewriter to add a textual component. Grotesquely misshapen but surprisingly deft, Gentry's work shares a love of craft-based materials with the mixed-media sculptural pieces of Leia Jervert, who presents a site-specific installation in Happy's Closet — an intimate, retrofitted project room. Her slight-of-hand sculptures subvert expectations of both media and subject matter, echoing the sophisticated-yet-crafty work of Jeff Koons.

Note:

The opening reception coincides with the monthly Los Feliz Art Walk.
