Arclight Hollywood says…

As hippies dodged the draft in the 1960s and more and more Americans embraced flower-power, free-love, and psychedelics, the corn-fed, deliriously happy Up With People singing brigade solicited lost souls to join the Moral Re-Armament, a hyper-conservative, cult-like religious sect designed to combat America's perceived decline into debauchery. The dark horse in the 13th Annual Docuweeks, Smile 'Til It Hurts is attorney Lee Storey's début feature documentary, inspired by her husband's secret former life as a singer in the wholesome ensemble. The first film to chronicle the Up With People story features over 40 years' worth of archival material as well as interviews with former members, revealing what happens "when ideology, money and groupthink converge to co-opt youthful idealism."
