The lavishly illustrated docu-novel from artist Zak Smith expands on certain extant themes in his paintings and drawings — specifically those relating to the alt-culture, or indie wing, of the porn business. While the surreal sexual frankness (and frankly surreal sexuality) of Smith's richly detailed narrative are undeniably titillating, the artist makes it clear his original motives for being in porn were far from artistic. The resulting book reads not unlike a George Plimpton-style adventure in immersive investigation, as the artist chronicles his adventures in front of the camera as eager rookie Zak Sabbath, with words, pictures, self-awareness, and dark humor.
