On cursory listen, Van Hunt's M.O. seems conspicuously obvious. He's a solo artist who displays an uncommon depth of talent (he's a multi-instrumentalist as well as a singer, writer, and producer), and an idiosyncratic loner who prefers an independent, label-less approach. All signs point to Prince, an artist Hunt acknowledges has exerted a strong influence on his career — but, surprisingly, no more than artists like the Stooges and Gang of Four. It's that mix that results in his left-field approach to a familiar sonic palate; and in a world where the purple one seems increasingly incapable of delivering the goods, artists like Van Hunt are more than welcome to try their hand at it.
