Los Angeles artist Michael Hayden arrives at the Smooth n Purdy Gallery in The Complex for a solo exhibition of recent encaustic and mixed media paintings curated by Greg Cohen. Hayden is reformed from his childhood days of pyromania, now channeling burning tendencies into works of brightly-colored molten beeswax and resin canvases. "The use of found objects and other items helps me tell stories and communicate ideas," Hayden asserts, "as they've obviously had another life before becoming part of my work." A portion of opening night sales goes to PAWS/LA in celebration of their 20-year anniversary assisting animal companions of low-income seniors and people with life-threatening illnesses.
