Ask Your Mama
Sunday Aug 30, 2009 (7:30pm)
$1-$116
“Hip Hop seduces the symphony tonight when Laura Karpman's Ask Your Mama, a genre-grinding street musical inspired by Langston Hughes' revolutionary poem, "Ask Your Mama; 12 Moods For Jazz" makes its long-awaited West Coast debut. Taking center stage is the legendary Jessye Norman, a soprano whose vocals have influenced everyone from Sandra Bernhard to opera-obsessed Rufus Wainwright. Sharing the affair are Pennsylvania hip-hoppers, the Roots, jazz gal Nnenna Freelon, and, of course, the great Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.”
Hot jazz, German song, Latin cha-cha and Afro-Cuban drumming come together in this collaboration between Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman and world-renowned soprano Jessye Norman. Inspired by Langston Hughes' epic poem Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz, this heady mixture weaves the collective memories of America and the hopes for its future into a tapestry of orchestral music and sound samples.
