Dean Chamberlain: Portraits of Psychedelic Pioneers

Venice-based photographer Dean Chamberlain has enjoyed decades of critical and popular acclaim, a compendium of exhibitions and publications, and a high profile (no pun intended) in the progressive art and cultural diaspora that stretches from the beatniks to Burning Man. The installation of his portraits of counterculture luminaries at Abbot Kinney marijuana dispensary and art gallery 99 High seems the most perfect fit yet. His unique method of painting the air during long-exposure photograhy — sometimes up to an hour — and his penchant for depicting his famous sitters (Tim Leary, David Bowie, Jeff Koons) in the colorful surroundings of their own art and object-packed homes, combine to yield startling, saturated, rococo images that impart not only the literal picture, but the inner life of his subjects.
