Founded 25 years ago on Cinco de Mayo, Culture Clash still reigns as the foremost Latino performance trio in the US. Now, they've brought their bawdy, irreverent brand of cultural commentary to the Getty Villa for its fourth annual outdoor production, a very loose adaptation of Peace. Originally written by Ancient Athenian comic playwright and political satirist Aristophanes, the play gets a 21st-century update with a Michael Jackson impersonation, saucy regional comedy, an all-female mariachi band, and scatological humor based on Greek mythology's belief that a dung beetle is the only creature capable of making it to the top of Mount Olympus. Artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Bill Rauch, helmed the blush-inducing production, which also features comedy by actors John Fleck and Amy Hill, and eye-popping scenic design by Ken Roht.

The Getty Museum says…

The comic heroes of the nation's most prominent Chicano-Latino performance troupe Culture Clash and guest director Bill Rauch invoke the revolutionary spirit of Aristophanes in freely adapting his zany and visionary utopian escapade Peace for the Getty Villa's Outdoor Classical Theater.

In 421 B.C., the 27-year-old comic playwright Aristophanes launched a ribald and scathing theatrical assault on Athens' entrenched "military-industrial complex." High on Mount Olympus, the War god has imprisoned the goddess Peace and holds sway over all of Greece; while on Earth below, a small band of rustic patriots hatch a daring plot to engineer her rescue and restore Peace to the land.

Please be advised that PEACE contains adult language and bawdy humor and is not suitable for children.
