Environmental documentaries have been popping up at an alarming rate, providing lots of proselytizing, but little action. No Impact Man promises a welcome departure from this model as filmmakers Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein follow Colin Beavan in his year-long quest to dramatically reduce his carbon footprint by swearing off automated transportation, packaged anything, processed food, electricity (eventually), and other creature comforts we take for granted. Beavan's own admitted liberal guilt, his wife's hilarious sarcasm and skepticism in joining him in the project, and an environmental dressing-down from a neighborhood gardener make this doc not simply a lecture, but actually entertaining. The film opens September 18 at Laemmle Playhouse 7 and Town Center 5.
