In his first independent exhibition at Roberts & Tilton, Titus Kaphar rewrites history. By slashing, draping, arranging, and painting his work, the Michigan-born artist creates contemporary narratives out of important periods in time, building his stories from a combination of art history artifacts and a unique perspective. While Kaphar's work reinterprets the past, his final pieces suggest that he is both destroying and constructing a new one. One can only imagine what formerly stood in place of a torn piece of canvas, for example, or whose portrait once occupied a regal gilded frame. Overall, the collection presented in Reconstruction stresses the importance of the role of the "writer" in how history is formed and perceived.
