Lawrence Asher Gallery says…

The dialogue in Playscapes and Architectonic Dreams riffs off paintings inspired by a 1980s video-game aesthetic and intricate diorama sculptures (think uber-sophisticated Erector Set). Together, the works create a landscape of curiosities past, and a future that needs to be reconsidered. Dotson adheres to a rigid, linear perspective that celebrates an arsenal of video game symbols in their full Technicolor glory, and Carlson's self-contained "toys" explore a juvenile fascination with the inner workings of awesome structures. The removal of the artist's hand in both bodies of work suggests an effort to make the nostalgia of childlike curiosity universal.
