Owen Smith's use of archetypal characters such as the boxer taking a blow in the ring, men working high in the sky on construction scaffolds, and seductive women from flophouses and burlesque shows, combined with his technique of painting tight compositions with oils and vibrant colors, points to the influence of the past on the artist's present series. The works channel a familiar film noir aesthetic, and Smith's decision to adopt a painterly style first popular during the Depression breathes new life into images once considered "long gone."
