Located at the prewar Union Theater in historic West Adams, the Velaslavasay Panorama reinvigorates the lost tradition of panoramic painting — an art form where the spectator is surrounded by a 360-degree rendering. Now, LA's only theater with a circular painting in its rotunda hosts media scholar Dr. Machiko Kusahara in a lecture on the short-lived but no less dynamic period of panoramic painting during Japan's Meiji period (1868-1912). Dr. Kusahara's illustrated presentation includes research on the Japanese panoramas' artistic construction as well as the social role the panoramas played in 1890s Japan.
