Where London has the Victoria and Albert, LA has the Craft and Folk Art Museum; yet, too often, the little institution has been overshadowed by its culturally monolithic neighbor LACMA. The museum continues to hold its rightful place on the exhibition radar with a look at the artistry behind the tarot deck, from the Italian Renaissance through today. Author of The Tarot: History, Symbolism and Divination, artist Robert M. Place also curated The Fool's Journey, which highlights the magnificent design of the 22 "major arcana" tarot cards, from the Fool, Magician, and High Priestess through the Sun, Judgment, and the World.

Craft and Folk Art Museum says…

"While known today primarily as a fortune telling or occult deck, the tarot was born out of the intellectual and artistic developments of the Italian Renaissance. Tarot's icons and symbology can be found in the popular arts, and philosophy of this rich historic period. Influenced by alchemy, Hermetic mysticism and the concept of Anima Mundi (the fifth element of life), the Tarot became a conversation between mystics and artists that has lasted over five centuries."
