LA painter Kenny Harris is a modern update on the archetype of the peripatetic plein air school, an artist whose frequent travels to exotic (read: remote and/or forbidden) locales from South America to Cuba — and most recently, Turkey — result in what in other hands would be volumes of prose or lush documentary films. Taking slightly off-axis viewpoints on receding sweeps of rooftops or coastline, Harris renders architecture, nature, and atmosphere with a consistently loose hand, making no attempt at realism, instead getting at a deeper truth that takes into account what it feels like to be in a place. The famous delicacy and majesty of Istanbul's minarets, markets, and gardens make for Harris' perfect muse.
