Writing in her seminal essay collection On Photography, art and media critic Susan Sontag was adamant concerning the inherent differences women bring to the making of photographs. Believing that all photographs express choice and opinion, whether the photographer is conscious of this or not, and further decrying the symbolic violence involved in using the camera to objectify the female body, it is easy to see how she might have seen a woman's decision to become a photographer as a political as well as a creative act. New Image Art's survey of female shutterbugs shows the multifaceted evolution of photography as an art form, now that a few new generations of fearless lady snappers have had their way with it.
